SHOCHU SALE & TASTING
We’ve got the first of many Holiday Tastings coming up this Saturday, and we’re starting things off with a BANG! Although we are first and foremost a sake shop, we also carry a limited amount of other quality items like umeshu and shochu. So this Saturday we have decided to hold our very first SHOCHU SALE & TASTING!
Shochu is a distilled beverage unlike sake which is brewed. This means it has a higher alcohol level and a stronger flavor.
The three premium shochu we plan to taste this Saturday will be on SALE for a SPECIAL PRICE price during the tasting event. Shochu does not need to be refrigerated and make a great Christmas present!
We’ll be sampling the following shochu, each with their own unique and distinct flavor.
Toyonaga Shochu
Nadine likes to call this a “Ginjo” shochu because it really drinks like a ginjo sake. It is still definitely a shochu in flavor and alcohol level, but it comes across a lot softer and sweeter than most shochu. Made from rice, this shochu comes from the Kuma district of Kyushu. It is described as exceptionally smooth and mellow with a clean finish.
Yamanomori Shochu
Made from barley and koji rice, Yamanomori is truly a shochu lovers shochu. Bold and flavorful, this shochu from Nagasaki prefecture has that quintessential shochu flavor, but drinks clean and smooth. If light flavored shochu is not your thing, try Yamanomori for a big bold taste!
Iki Shochu
“Smooooooth” is the only way to describe this shochu and yes, you need to include the extra “o”s when you say it. If you’re someone who thinks shochu is too strong a drink, Iki is the shochu for you! Named after Iki Island where the distillery is located, this shochu drinks light and ultra smooth. We actually prefer this shochu straight with no mixer.
So please stop by and join us this Saturday for our first shochu tasting and sale. We’ll be pouring all day.

SHOCHU SALE & TASTING
Saturday, December 4, 2010
10:00 am to 8:00 pm
What is Shochu?
Shochu is a distilled Japanese beverage usually made from barley, sweet potato or rice. Because it is distilled, it has a much higher alcohol level than most sake, usually around 25%. The Chinese kanji for “shochu” literally means “burned liquor”.
How do you Drink Shochu?
Shochu can be consumed many different ways but is usually enjoyed chilled over ice or mixed with tea or fruit juices. During colder months it is sometimes mixed straight with warm water. One popular way to order shochu is as a “Chuhai” which is shochu mixed with soda water and lemon.
